Pastoral Care

Pastoral Care Ministry

Committee/ Team - WHO WE ARE:

Under the guidance of the Minister for Pastoral Care, we aim to strengthen the spiritual well-being of the congregation through provision of emotional, physical, social, and spiritual support.   The work is informally led by a small team, the Pastoral Care Committee, with nine Members.  That said, pastoral care is undertaken by every member of the congregation in many ways and is one of the treasured attributes of Parkdale United Church.

WHAT DO WE DO?

The Pastoral Care Ministry mandate calls for: Addressing the pastoral care needs of the whole congregation, providing leadership in expanding faith formation and small group ministry to build relationships and foster a pastoral care culture.  The focus of this ministry continues to be:

  • Intentional listening both to individuals and the needs of the congregation; personal and inter-personal relationship building
  • Providing pastoral care individually and through small group ministry;
  • Finding ways and implementing practices that nurture a culture of pastoral care in the congregation and impact our lives as God’s family.

Specific things that we do include:

  • Maintaining contact with shut-ins and congregants in retirement homes (In person and telephone)
  • Special communion service (twice a year)
  • Oversight of prayer group and prayer shawl
  • Greeting card ministry
  • Oversight of the Council on Aging, and Smart Aging Session
  • Easter flowers – with assistance from Melanie and Sara
  • Women’s ministry – quarterly sessions (needs leadership)
  • Support to the funeral coordinator, if needed
  • Small group studies led by Minister of Pastoral Care
  • Caring Kitchens (under revision)
  • Gift cards to university students
  • Special information/education sessions e.g. fraud, panel with lawyer, doctor and funeral director, mental health, etc.
  • Men’s breakfast
  • Annual Women’s Retreat (Lauren Barbour lead)
  • Reflective Service in December (led by Pastoral Care Minister)

WHAT MINISTRY DO WE PROVIDE?

Pastoral Care fosters a caring community. It creates a sense of belonging and support, helping congregants feel valued and loved within the church family.  It reinforces the notion that faith is not only about doctrine but also about genuine care for each other.

Pastoral Care provides spiritual insights, guidance and wisdom to help individuals navigate challenges and decisions in alignment with their faith.

Pastoral care offers a safe space for individuals to share their pain, grief, and struggles, facilitating emotional healing and restoration.
